HARDWOODS AND SOFTWOODS

Both timbers are used in construction and for decking.
They offer different feel, look and colour.

Hardwoods such as oak and teak are slow growing, are more durable, have natural resistance against fungal attack and have high wear resistance.

Softwoods such as southern yellow pine have fewer knots and has a better wear resistance than other softwoods such as Scandinavian pine which is still an ideal product for decking and less expensive .
Softwoods timber is treated with preservatives .
When looked after can last for up to 30 years.

Looking after your deck by keeping it clean and treating it once a year .
Both hardwoods and softwoods can be stained.

Building regulations
As a general rule timber decks do not require planning approval unless they are 20 meters from a road , if the deck design is part of a new building or extension and if the the deck is 3 meters or higher will need to be designed to be structurally stable and be submitted for approval to your local building control office.
Balustrades guarding a deck elevated over 600 mm above ground level must conformity with building regulations .Should be 1100 mm high and able to resist a horizontal loading of 0.74kn
